Rain on move day is a Sydney fact of life, not a disaster — and it’s not a reason to cancel. A booked crew, a booked lift and a lease that ends on a fixed date can’t shift because of a grey forecast, so the job is to move well in the wet, not around it. Here’s how a wet move actually runs, and what you can do to help it along.

Sydney gets its heaviest rain in the warmer months, and a clear morning can turn into a southerly downpour by lunch. You can’t plan a move around a forecast that changes by the hour — so we plan for the rain instead.

How the crew protects your things in the wet

The method changes; the care doesn’t.

  • Extra wrapping on soft furnishings. Sofas, armchairs and mattresses get shrink-wrapped so water beads off instead of soaking in. Fabric that gets wet on a truck is fabric that arrives smelling musty — the wrap is what prevents it.
  • Blankets stay on. Timber, leather and painted surfaces keep their moving blankets, which handle the odd splash on the dash to the truck.
  • Electronics and art wrapped inside. TVs, computers and framed pieces are wrapped before they leave the house, not on the wet footpath.
  • An enclosed truck. Once a piece is aboard, it’s dry. The truck is staged as close to the door as we can get it to shorten every carry.
  • Staged by the door. Instead of carrying items out one at a time into the rain, the crew stages them by the entrance and moves in efficient runs — often timing the dashes between the heavier showers.
  • Slower on wet stairs and ramps. The one real hazard in the wet is footing. Carries on wet stairs, ramps and tailgates slow down deliberately — a dropped piece or a slip helps no one.

The floors are the real risk

On a wet move the thing most likely to cop damage isn’t the furniture — it’s the floor. Water and mud tracked across new carpet or polished boards is the classic rainy-move mess.

So floor protection goes down at both addresses before anything comes in: runners on the traffic paths, hard-floor protection where it’s needed, and the crew managing wet boots at the door. It’s the same protection we lay on any move — it just earns its keep in the rain.

What you can do to help

A few small things make a wet move faster and cleaner:

  • Towels at both doors — for the crew’s boots and the odd wet box
  • Clear the path — the fewer obstacles between door and truck, the fewer trips in the rain
  • A mop and a towel handy — for the inevitable bit of water on the entry
  • Flatten some cardboard by the doors as a first line on the floor
  • Park your car close to the door the night before, then move it for the truck — every metre of carry is a metre less in the rain
  • Keep your essentials box in the car, dry and with you

When rain does mean rescheduling

There’s a difference between a wet day and a dangerous one. A passing shower, drizzle, a typical Sydney downpour — we work through those. A severe storm or a flood warning that makes carrying genuinely unsafe is different, and in that case we won’t push through for the sake of it. We’ll talk it through with you and find the safest option, because no move is worth someone getting hurt on a slick tailgate.

That call is rare, and we make it together — not a surprise cancellation, and not a stubborn push into unsafe conditions.

No wet-weather surcharge

A rainy move costs the same as a dry one. There’s no weather premium — the wrapping, the blankets and the floor runners that protect your things in the wet are already in the hourly rate. Rain can add a little time, because careful carries are slower, and that shows up as ordinary time on the clock, never a surcharge.

If move day looks wet, it’s genuinely fine. The crew has done it hundreds of times, everything that matters gets wrapped, and the floors are protected before a single box comes in. When you’re ready, get a quote — and don’t let the forecast change your plans.

FAQ

Quick answers.

Do removalists move house in the rain?

Yes. Rain is normal on a Sydney move day and we don't cancel for it — a booked crew, a booked lift and a lease end date can't just shift because of a forecast. What changes is the method, not the day: extra wrapping on soft furnishings, floor protection at both ends, careful staging by the door, and slower, safer carries on wet stairs and ramps. We only reschedule for genuinely dangerous weather, and we make that call with you.

What happens to my furniture if it rains on moving day?

It stays protected. Upholstered furniture and mattresses get shrink-wrapped so water can't soak in, timber and leather keep their moving blankets, and electronics and artwork are wrapped before they leave the house. The truck is enclosed, so once items are aboard they're dry. The crew stages everything by the door and times the carries so pieces spend the least possible time in the open.

Should I reschedule my move if it's raining?

Usually no. A passing shower or a wet Sydney day is a method change, not a reason to move a whole booking — and rescheduling has its own costs when a lift booking, a lease end and a settlement date are all locked in. The exception is genuinely dangerous weather: a severe storm or flood warning that makes carrying unsafe. In that case we'll talk it through with you and find the safest option rather than push through.

How do you protect floors when moving in the wet?

Floor runners and hard-floor protection go down at both addresses before anything comes in, and the crew manage wet and muddy boots at the door so your floors and carpets don't cop it. It's the same floor protection we lay on any move, just more important in the wet — the biggest risk on a rainy move isn't the furniture, it's water and mud tracked across new carpet or polished boards.

Does moving in the rain cost more?

No. There's no wet-weather surcharge — a rainy move is billed at the same hourly rate as any other day. Rain can add a little time because careful carries in the wet are slower, and that shows up as normal time on the clock, not a premium. Everything that protects your belongings in the rain — the wrapping, the blankets, the floor runners — is already included in the hourly.
