In one paragraph

What a Sydney removalist actually does.

A Sydney removalist turns up with a crew and a truck, wraps your furniture in blankets, carries it down to the truck, drives it to the new place, and carries it in — placed where you want it, beds reassembled, boxes in the rooms they're labelled for. Hartmann does this across Sydney metro on hourly rates from $150/hr + GST for two movers and a truck, with larger crews from $210, $240 and $300/hr + GST for bigger homes. The 3-hour minimum covers most studios and 1-bedroom apartments. Everything is quoted before you book — hourly rate and estimated hours range — so the total is predictable, not a surprise.

By home size

What a Sydney move costs, by home.

Based on typical Sydney moves with moderate access — one flight of stairs, a loading zone within 30 metres of the entrance, a 2–3 hour strata lift window if an apartment. Access and stairs can move these numbers by 30%; we build your specific access into the quote.

Home type Crew Hours Typical total Note
Studio or 1-bed apartment 2 movers + truck 3–5 hrs $450–$900 + GST Often completes at the 3-hour minimum.
2-bed apartment 2 or 3 movers + truck 4–6 hrs $600–$1,200 + GST Three movers often cheaper total when stairs are involved.
3-bed house or apartment 3 movers + bigger truck 6–9 hrs $1,200–$1,800 + GST Bigger truck avoids a second trip — one-day finish.
4-bed home 4 movers + big truck 7–10 hrs $1,800–$2,600 + GST Four movers is the right call — three will stretch to 12 hrs.
5+ bed home or estate 4 movers, often 2-day 10–13 hrs or split $2,600–$4,000 + GST Two-day move often cheaper than one long exhausting day.
Office relocation (20–50 staff) Multi-crew, after-hours Weekend window $3,000–$15,000 + GST See /services/commercial for the week-by-week timeline.

All prices plus GST. Full cost tables and detailed factors on the pricing page.

How it runs

From quote to last box, four steps.

01 · The quote

Hourly rate + hours range, in writing

Tell us the bedroom count, the two addresses, and the access at each end (lift, stairs, driveway). Thales Yan sends back an hourly rate and an estimated hours range within 60 minutes during business hours.

02 · The booking

Date locked, certificate sent if needed

Confirm by email. We hold the crew and truck for your date. If your building needs a certificate of currency for strata, we send it within the hour — weeks before move day.

03 · Move day

Fixed crew, matched truck, blanket-wrapped

Crew arrives on the 30-minute window confirmed the night before. Floor runners down, furniture blankets on every piece before it moves, disassembly as needed, truck loaded in the order it'll be unloaded.

04 · At the new place

Placed, reassembled, invoice on completion

Same crew unloads. Furniture placed where you want it, beds reassembled, boxes in the rooms they're labelled for. Walk-through with you, then the invoice comes through — hourly × actual hours, plus any agreed add-ons. No surprises.

Why Hartmann

Six things most Sydney removalists don't do.

The Sydney removalist market has hundreds of operators. Most are fine; a handful are genuinely bad. The below is what we do differently to the market median.

01

Hourly rate, published before you call

Every crew tier has its rate on the website: $150/hr + GST for two movers and a truck; $210 for three movers; $240 for three movers with a bigger truck; $300 for four movers and a big truck. No hidden fees, no "we will assess on arrival" surprises, no pressure to upgrade on the day.

02

$20 million public liability, certificate on request

We carry $20 million of public liability plus goods-in-transit insurance on every move. Certificate of currency sent to you (or directly to strata) within the hour if a building needs it before your lift booking is approved.

03

Three-hour minimum, call-out shown on quote

Most studio and one-bedroom moves finish within the 3-hour minimum — labour total $450 + GST, plus the call-out fee shown on your quote. If your move runs under 3 hours, you still pay the 3-hour minimum; we never overcharge for a fast finish.

04

Fixed crew, matched truck, no mid-day swaps

The crew that loads your place is the crew that unloads it. The truck is sized to the home on the quote — no "too small" surprises, no second trips. If a larger truck keeps you to one trip we send the larger truck at the same per-hour rate.

05

Thales Yan on every quote, within the hour

All Sydney quote enquiries route through Thales Yan, our sales contact. Same person for the residential quote, the commercial quote, the apartment with the tight lift window, and the storage pod add-on. Reply within 1 hour during business hours.

06

Specific about what we are not

We are not AFRA-accredited. We do not move interstate (Central Coast and Southern Highlands aside). We do not offer "cheap" or "from $22 per half hour" pricing. We are a Sydney-metro, transparent-hourly, mid-market removalist — and a bad fit if what you want is the cheapest Gumtree option.

What makes Sydney different

The logistics the national guides miss.

Sydney moves carry logistics that generic "moving house" advice doesn't cover. The four recurring ones:

Strata lift bookings. Most Sydney apartments over three storeys require a booked lift window. Peak season (Oct–Feb) this needs to be booked four weeks out — and the lift window, not the removalist's availability, becomes the date constraint on the whole move.

Council parking permits. City of Sydney, Waverley, Randwick, Inner West and North Sydney councils all require short-term commercial-vehicle permits for street-side loading in busy streets. $40–$120 depending on council, booked 7–10 days ahead.

Harbour Bridge traffic. Cross-bridge moves (common: Eastern Suburbs to North Shore) add 15–45 minutes between 8–10am and 3–6pm. A 7am start on a cross-bridge move saves about 90 minutes of total time — roughly $225 on a 3-mover job at $210/hr + GST.

Terrace stairs. Paddington, Surry Hills, Newtown and Balmain terraces have interior stair widths that don't take a modern king mattress or a corner sofa without disassembly. We flag this on the quote when photos show it.

Sydney FAQ

Sydney removalist questions, straight answers.

How much do Sydney removalists cost?

Sydney removalists typically charge by the hour. Hartmann Removals starts at $150/hr + GST for two movers and a truck, with larger crews from $210, $240 and $300/hr + GST. Minimum charge is 3 hours. A separate call-out fee applies on top of the hourly rate and is shown on your quote before you book. A typical 2-bedroom Sydney apartment move runs $600–$1,200 + GST plus the call-out.

Which Sydney suburbs does Hartmann cover?

All Sydney suburbs — from Penrith in the west to Bondi in the east, Manly in the north to Cronulla in the south.

What is the difference between hourly and fixed-price Sydney removalists?

Hourly removalists charge per hour of actual work (the industry norm); fixed-price removalists quote a lump sum that includes a buffer for things going wrong. Hourly usually saves money on moves with good access; fixed-price wins when access is difficult and you want no surprises. We charge hourly because it's fairer on most moves — a Sydney apartment with a 3-hour lift window shouldn't pay the same as a 3-bed terrace with narrow stairs.

Do Sydney removalists need to book the strata lift?

Yes in most buildings over three storeys. The lift booking is the constraint on apartment moves — typically 2–3 weeks in advance, longer in peak season (October–February). We liaise with building management on your behalf but the move application and bond must come from you as the resident. See our apartment-moves service page for building-specific details.

Is there a minimum charge for a Sydney move?

Yes, 3 hours on every Hartmann booking. Most studio and one-bedroom moves finish inside 3 hours, so the minimum is usually the labour total ($450 + GST for two movers). A separate call-out fee applies on top and is shown on your quote before you book.

Are Sydney removalists insured for damage?

Reputable Sydney removalists carry both public liability insurance (for damage to floors, walls, lifts, neighbouring property) and goods-in-transit insurance (for damage to your furniture in our care). Hartmann carries $20 million of public liability plus goods-in-transit cover. Certificate of currency available on request — strata often asks for it before approving your lift booking.

How do I choose a Sydney removalist?

Three questions get you to a shortlist of three in under 30 minutes: (1) Are the hourly rates published on the website? (2) Do they carry both public liability and goods-in-transit insurance — ask for the certificate of currency? (3) Do they publish an ABN and a physical Sydney address? Any "yes" to all three is a legitimate operator. Compare total quotes (hourly × estimated hours + minimum), not just the hourly rate.

Can Sydney removalists do same-day moves?

Often yes, subject to crew and truck availability. Call before 10am on the day for the best chance of a same-day booking. Same-day within Sydney metro is quoted at the standard hourly rate — there is no "rush fee". The main constraint for apartments is the strata lift booking, which most buildings need 48–72 hours notice for.

How long does a typical Sydney move take?

1-bedroom apartment: 3–5 hours with two movers. 2-bedroom: 4–6 hours. 3-bedroom home: 6–9 hours with three movers. 4-bedroom home: 7–10 hours with four movers. Sydney-metro drive time is usually 20–60 minutes between suburbs, longer if the move crosses the Harbour Bridge during peak traffic. See our "How long does a Sydney move take" guide for hour-by-hour breakdowns.

What Sydney suburbs do Hartmann cover for residential moves?

All Sydney metropolitan suburbs — from Penrith in the west to Bondi in the east, Manly in the north to Cronulla in the south. We have dedicated location pages for the 22 suburbs we move through most often (Bondi, Parramatta, Chatswood, Surry Hills, Newtown, Manly, North Sydney, Randwick, Mosman, Paddington, CBD, Bondi Junction, Crows Nest, Lane Cove, St Leonards, Kirribilli, Cremorne, Milsons Point, Cammeray, Northbridge, Artarmon, Neutral Bay).
