Removalists in Balmain

Balmain is Federation terraces on a peninsula. A 2-bed terrace move is $750–$1,050 + GST with two movers at $150/hr; a 3-bed is $1,050–$1,470 + GST on the 3-mover crew. The variable is Darling Street — the main spine of the peninsula is narrow and busy, and load-outs on it need timing around bus and traffic peaks.

Moving in Balmain

What Balmain actually involves.

Balmain 2041 sits on a peninsula sticking into Sydney Harbour, in Inner West Council. The housing is almost entirely Federation and Victorian terraces on narrow streets running back from Darling Street and Mullens Street, with a smaller band of freestanding houses closer to the harbour foreshore at Elkington Park and Ballast Point. Most terraces are 2- or 3-storey with narrow frontages and internal staircases that twist.

Darling Street is the peninsula's main east-west spine, running from the ferry wharf at East Balmain to the roundabout at Balmain Junction. It's a busy two-lane road with buses, angled parking on both sides, and constant café and shop traffic through Rozelle. For load-outs on Darling Street itself we usually stage from a side street (Grove Street, Cameron Street, Beattie Street) rather than trying to park directly on the strip.

A meaningful chunk of Balmain terraces have rear-lane access — the laneways off Grove, Booth, Church and Adolphus Streets are workable for a moving truck and cut the carry distance significantly. If your block backs onto a lane, tell us the lane name on the quote call. Rear-lane loads finish 30–45 minutes faster than street-frontage equivalents on comparable terraces.

Off-peninsula access is via Victoria Road to the west (linking into the ANZAC Bridge and Western Distributor) and via the Iron Cove Bridge north (linking Drummoyne). Both are heavy at commuter peaks. Weekday mid-morning is the cleanest window for a truck route in and out.

Before you book

What to tell us when you call.

The quicker we know these, the tighter the hours range on your quote.

01

Rear-lane access? Send the lane name

Rear-lane loads on Balmain terraces cut real time. If you know your block backs onto Grove, Booth, Church, Adolphus or similar, tell us the lane and we'll park in continuously rather than shuffling with Darling Street traffic.

02

Darling Street address? Aim for off-peak

Weekday 10am–2pm is the cleanest window for Darling Street truck access. Weekends work but parking fills by late morning — early Saturday starts are better than afternoons.

03

Narrow stair turns + large items

Victorian terrace staircases were built for 1890s furniture. Modern sofas and king beds sometimes need a quick disassembly or a balcony/window option — we bring straps and tools.

04

3-mover crew usually beats 2-mover for full terraces

For a 3-bed terrace the 3-mover crew at $210/hr almost always beats a 2-mover crew at $150/hr on total cost — the hours drop by a third. We size the crew on the quote call.

Representative move

A typical Balmain move.

2-bed terrace · off Darling Street · 5.5 hours · $825 + GST

A classic Balmain job: a 2-bedroom terrace on a narrow one-way off Darling Street, two levels with a tight original staircase and resident-permit parking. The peninsula's narrow streets mean the truck has to be placed with care.

Two movers and a truck, five and a half hours — 5.5 × $150 = $825 + GST. The staircase and the single-lane street did the damage to the clock; a couple of pieces came apart to make the turn at the landing.

Pattern: in the Balmain and Rozelle terraces off Darling Street, the permit parking and the staircases run the day. Two movers is right for most terraces; we ask for a photo of the stairs first.

The four lanes we run most often from Balmain. Same hourly rate, same inclusions, same insurance cover on every run.

01

Balmain → Sydney CBD

via Victoria Rd / ANZAC Bridge · ~15–20 min off-peak

Common commuter lane. Watch Victoria Road eastbound morning peak.

02

Balmain → Newtown

via Parramatta Rd / Enmore Rd · ~10–15 min

Inner West cross-suburb lane. Terrace to terrace — rear-lane access at both ends is the biggest variable.

03

Balmain → Surry Hills

via ANZAC Bridge / Wentworth Ave · ~15–20 min

Peninsula to inner city. Terrace to terrace or apartment — CBD-fringe traffic on arrival.

04

Balmain → North Shore

via Iron Cove Bridge / Victoria Rd · ~20–30 min off-peak

Cross-harbour lane. Iron Cove Bridge is the quicker route than the Harbour Bridge for a Balmain start.

Balmain FAQ

Balmain removalist FAQs.

How much does a Balmain removalist cost in 2026?

A 2-bed Balmain Federation terrace with two movers is $750–$1,050 + GST at $150/hr over 5–7 hours. A 3-bed terrace on our 3-mover crew runs $1,050–$1,470 + GST. Rear-lane access typically saves 30–60 minutes and pushes toward the lower end of each range.

Can a truck park on Darling Street?

For short unloads, yes — weekday 10am–2pm is the cleanest window. Weekend afternoons around the cafés and shops are the slowest. For full load-outs on Darling Street we usually stage from a side street.

Do you handle terrace houses with narrow stairwells?

Yes — Balmain terraces are one of our regular move types. Straps, ratchets, dolly kits sized for 1890s stair turns. Modern king beds and larger sofas sometimes need quick disassembly, which is included in the hour rate.

What if my terrace doesn't have rear-lane access?

Still workable, just a bit longer on the clock. We park on the street-facing side, stage the load, and plan around Darling Street traffic. Add roughly 30–60 minutes to the typical hours on a comparable rear-laneway move.

Do you cover Rozelle, Lilyfield and Birchgrove?

Yes. Same rates apply across the Balmain peninsula and adjacent Inner West — Rozelle, Lilyfield, Birchgrove, East Balmain. Very common short local lanes.

Do you handle harbourside houses with driveway access?

Yes — the Elkington Park and Ballast Point end of the peninsula has a smaller band of freestanding houses with driveways. These quote as family-home jobs on our 3-mover crew at $210/hr.

Are you insured for Balmain terrace moves?

Every job carries public liability and goods-in-transit insurance. Floor runners at both ends, blanket wrap on furniture, straps on the truck. Certificate of currency available on request.
